When skin is subjected to stimuli such as ultraviolet radiation, radicals (reactive molecular species, including active oxygen) are generated that attack and destroy the tissues of the skin. To protect itself from these radicals, the skin produces a dark pigment (melanin) to block the ultraviolet radiation that is the initial causal factor. This is the mechanism involved in the sun-tan process.

Melanin is technically the enemy in terms of whiter skin, but this substance in fact plays a beneficial role in protecting the skin from ultraviolet radiation and the resultant radicals.

What happens when the production of essential, protective melanin is halted by whitening ingredients?
With nothing to block the violent stimulus of ultraviolet radiation, radicals are generated continuously, causing cell death and ultimately leading to visible aging, with symptoms such as spots, wrinkles, and sagging.

Our goal as skin specialists, from cosmetic dermatologists to cosmetic surgeons, is certainly not to promote white skin at the expense of healthy skin. But what if the radicals produced by ultraviolet radiation could be eliminated and suppressed using Radical Sponge^®?
